Case Study:

Optergy App

Background & Objective

Building Automation has traditionally been a function of the integrator with limited to no ability for occupiers to engage in the buildings performance or existing status. With today’s accessibility to mobile devices and a greater understand of the impact of our energy demand on our surrounding environment Optergy sought to build a mobile application to be accessed by both building occupiers and their owners/managers.

Modular was chosen as the core digital product design and development partner for their flagship product.

Our Strategy

Given this a product which would reach a large unknown audience with any number of devices we were faced with the challenge of creating an app to feature in any of the growing mobile app marketplaces. In order to ensure the most efficient process for transporting the product to each marketplace a key decision was made to utilise the Ionic mobile app framework. This enabled us to easily test, demonstrate and display the product on any number of platforms without having to publish to the individual app stores.

Along with the normal challenges of building such an app, we also had the added challenge of interfacing with a legacy database/system built over many years prior. We solutioned this by creating an Application Programming Interface (API) which doubles as a potential interface for future ecosystem partners/customers looking to leverage the Optergy platform for their own systems.

By delivering the development of the app using an Agile project methodology we were able to get started almost immediately and our client felt empowered to amend and change priorities over the course of the project as internal work streams of the project evolved.

User Journey

As part of understanding the user demographic, we knew that we would have to deliver an intuitive user experience due to the ad-hoc nature of the products use. Given we were not building automation domain experts, we put ourselves in the role of a potential user in order to understand motivations and the priority in which we would want to receive information. So our User Interface and User Journey centre’s around simplicity and the information that is a priority for the end user.

Our design expertise has led us develop products that are uncluttered, intuitive and require minimal input from users. This flows into the product and ensures a concise user journey to deliver the appropriate building information directly to the user.
